Creation during isolation
In the face of an epidemic shutting down schools, seniors Jordan Scavo and Donya Moghaddari create art and writing as an outlet.
SARS-COV-2. COVID-19. Coronavirus. Whatever name you choose to address it by, the reality remains the same: until further notice, our lives have been put on hold. It's a hard time for a lot of us: we're missing our friends, stressed about having to learn by ourselves, and for some of us, mourning the supposed "best year of our lives" slipping through our fingers like sand. Yes, we are afraid. Yes, we are unsure. But above all, we are human. And what do humans do in times like this, where nothing is certain? We make our own purpose. We could be paralyzed by our fear, but instead, we are creating. We are using this time given to us to make art in a world filled with fear-mongering, intolerance, and loneliness. It's easy to get lost in the turmoil broiling around us. But art is the headphones we use to block out the deafening noise. Art is the bandage we use to cover our wounds and protect ourselves. Art is our safety, so we will create. No matter what.

Day after Day
As the days go by,
She realizes she's withering away.
Day after day, she puts on a painted smile,
Thinking nobody can see through it.
She gives it her all.
Seeing others put on the same brave face,
She stops wallowing in hiding;
Knowing that she's not the only one,
She doesn't have to carry her woes on her back.
Day after day, she knows she'll be okay.
sleepy World
My thoughts are finally coming together.
It had been a long time since I've felt this peace,
The kind of peace that allows you to sleep
And forget everything the next day.
Suddenly everything makes more sense after midnight;
As if I was struck by a spell of genius,
Or a spark of motivation
That gets me through the night.
Every task seems so clear and within reach
When looking at it in the night.
But then the moon goes home,
And with it my enthusiasm.
Before I knew better
Time after time,
I see reminders of the past.
The past that flew by so fast,
I don't know where it went.
I see reminders of the past,
The past that made me who I am.
I don't know where it went,
Though I'm glad to have known it.
The past that made me who I am,
Allowing me to spread my wings.
Though I'm glad to have known it,
I don't want it back.
Allowing me to spread my wings,
And making me try new things.
I don't want it back,
Even if I could do it all again.
And making me try new things,
I learned to be fearless.
Even if I could do it all again,
I wouldn't change a thing.
I learned to be fearless;
Time after time.
I wouldn't change a thing;
Living it became who I was.
Time after time,
I made mistakes.
Living it became who I was,
Before I knew better.
