Finding meaning
“Modern Nostradamus”, the second track on the album, is about a man that predicted certains events of the future with his quatrains (poems), which cleverly ties in with the title of the album. The song demonstrates the cruel nature of life, that people work so hard just to be able to get by in life. It discusses how modern technology is going to make human labor obsolete. The song cautions its listeners to look past the lies the government feeds us.
“Walk of Life” is about a boy, Walker, and his struggle with connecting with and talking to people. It discusses social anxiety, self harm, and depression. The part in which the bucket of blood falls on him at the school dance resembles the scene in Carrie and represents the bullying he faces. Walker’s life seems to progressively get worse - coming to a head when he somehow becomes paralyzed and mute. In an attempt to take his own life, he accidentally takes his wife’s instead. It seems as if Walker is schizophrenic. The progress of events in the song highlights Walker’s deteriorating mental state and mental illness in general.
“Things Ain't Changed”, the fourth song off of Quatrains, discusses the seemingly never-ending routine of going to work for a small amount of money just to get by, as highlighted in the lyric “14 hour work day, minimum pay.” The track criticizes society and the concept of the song enforces becoming just another part of the corporate machine.
