2019 MET GALA: THE FUTURE OF FASHION
By: Kristen HArriott
"Camp"1 [KAMP], (noun) :
love of the unnatural, of artifice and exaggeration
In 2019, the MET Gala hosted one of the most interesting showcases of fashion with its theme of "camp." At first eye-raising, the word's popularity soon transformed from "a family- fun outdoor adventure" to a commentary of the high class and wealth. To dress "camp" is to exaggerate the exaggerated; be extra. In this sense, we see fashion take a lens mirrored to that of surrealism; it's about basking in the fabulousness, irony, and humor of going as far as possible to stray away from the norm. Whether it's platform Crocs or an oyster gown, the 2019 MET Gala "camp" theme was highly anticipated, and arguably one of the most entertaining shows of fashion this decade.
